Sept 15, 2014 - Halifax, Canada — Ultra Electronics, TCS demonstrated the versatile capabilities of the Ultra ORION radio during DEFSEC Atlantic 2014.
TCS demonstrated the versatility of their Ultra ORION radio by establishing a high capacity, On-The-Move (OTM) link between their outside booth, on shore, and a Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat (RHIB) using voice communications and multiple live video feeds. The system also sustained voice communications between the shore and two divers performing an underwater hull inspection of a nearby ship using Ultra Electronics TCS’ RadioBridge and Ultra Electronics Maritime Systems’ Magneto Inductive communications systems, DiverCOMM™ and TerraCOMM™.
Visitors witnessed these new “Built-in-Canada” capabilities which are aimed at increasing maritime safety by allowing small boats to share communication systems and sensor data with divers, other ships and ship-to-shore.
Paul Zweers, Vice-President, Ultra Electronics TCS, commented: “We are proud to present these new capabilities to the Royal Canadian Navy. This demonstration shows the versatility of the ORION radio which can be used for landborne, seaborne and aerial applications.’’
The Ultra ORION family of Software Defined Radio (SDR) solutions is designed to enable robust high-capacity communications with over 50 different tactical modes including interoperability with thousands of previously fielded HCLOS radios across the world. The ORION X500-G tri-channel radio provides high-capacity communications (up to 1 Gbps), operates simultaneously in multiple bands (NATO full band 3/3+/4 and ISM 2.4/5.8GHz) and offers a large portfolio of waveforms. It can fulfill multiple roles such as backhaul repeater, range extension node, aggregation/distribution point, WLAN and a remote station for point-to-multipoint access at the edge.
