Ultra Electronics, TCS Launches Universal Networking Waveform (UNW)

OCTOBER 2014, MON 13

October 13, 2014 - Montreal, Canada — Ultra Electronics, TCS is proud to announce the launch of its latest software-defined mesh waveform, the Universal Networking Waveform (UNW). Ultra’s UNW solves the on-the-move wideband networking mission for the Armed Forces. It enables robust and mobile high-capacity communications delivering critical voice, data and high definition video across the battlefield.

Given the increasingly high expeditionary nature of today’s deployments, warfighters require continuous access to critical data under all mission circumstances. UNW provides the solution through end-to-end connectivity across multi-tier networks, whilst delivering unrivaled on-the-move high-capacity communications. UNW is powered by Ultra’s Tactical MIMO Engine (TME), a unique implementation of MIMO techniques, making it the fastest adaptive and most robust Non-Line-of-Sight (NLOS) mesh waveform. UNW can scale from division to the soldier level, eliminating the need for multiple non-interoperable networking waveforms.

Paul Zweers, Vice-President, Ultra Electronics, TCS, commented: “With the growth of megacities and increased importance of expeditionary deployments, robust NLOS communications is essential for both static and on-the-move communications. We are proud to field a solution that provides soldiers with a capability that enables them to focus on their mission rather than on their communications equipment”.

UNW has been tested for land, maritime and aerial missions and is available on the Ultra ORION family of radios, including:

  • X500-G: high-capacity tri-LOS radio
  • X505-G: compact and lightweight 2 channel outstation
